It's more an Iron Lung. Removing the metal shell would kill the person inside, as they have been mutilated beyond recognition of anything human. In order to be armored and functional to the desired extent of the Ministries, almost all of their organic tissue and limbs have been replaced with mechanized components. Their flesh and armor have become one in the same.

For Synthia, Concavious, Dioness, the DYAD, and much of the technology, I'd decided to take inspiration from the crystalized structure of cooled bismuth. I always found it to look advanced and alien.
