Because the whole plot is that Leif (the MC) gets shrunken and then is suddenly chosen by some gremlin-like creatures to be their queen.
So Leif, now queen, decides to update their lifestyle, but not entirely change it. Throughout her reign as this queen, she was out on a walk and soon encountered Rootish, seemingly lost in the forest. So throughout the story, Leif and Rootish go out on little trips throughout the forest, from Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter, and back to Spring, as Leif learns how to be a proper leader to the gremlin creatures while Rootish tries to find the truth in himself, trying to find his purpose in life, and if his memory was but illusion or not.
At the same time, both try to prevent Leif's now-possessed mom from destroying every forest she sees so she can find her daughter and bring her back to her.

"Things come at a cost when you're Leif's mom" is all I can consider to say.
